War Memorial Restoration at Coal Dock Park

Restoration work is underway on the Coal Dock Park War Memorial! This project will involve removing all the bricks, replacing the base layer, and installing new drainage. Project completion is expected by the middle of October, with details forthcoming about a rededication service being planned for November 8th.

Recreation

The mission of the Recreation Department is to improve the quality of life for all residents of Port Washington by facilitating leisure and cultural activities, special events and services that promote mental and physical health, self-development and community involvement.

Parks
The mission for Port Washington Parks is to provide opportunities for enjoying healthy outdoor recreation and to sustain Port Washington’s natural resources for present and future generations.

Programs/Service Lines

Recreation
  • Manage, facilitate, and staff youth & adult programming, special events, aquatic facility,  aquatic programming & special events.
  • Administer and facilitate facility and park rentals and usage.
  • Oversee and maintain all website, social media outlets and promotional materials.
  • Manage and facilitate the Celebration Bench & Tree program.
  • Manage and facilitate the Banner Program at Hill School Park and Pirates’ Hollow Waterpark.
Parks
  • There are 32 designated parks, 2 nature preserves, several municipal buildings and one cemetery covering roughly 160 acres that we actively manage.
  • The parks department is led by the Director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, 2 full time staff members and 13 seasonal employees.
  • There are several other open space areas that are not actively managed but will require maintenance at times for safety and other factors.
  • During the spring and summer season much of our efforts are dedicated to turf maintenance, facility rental preparation, plant bed maintenance, planting, and watering.
  • We work with several volunteers, partner with organizations, and reach out for other funding sources to aid us in these efforts.

Strategic Plan - Key Performance Indicators (KPI's)

Recreation

  • Program attendance, tracking utilization and participation in program and facility rentals. 
  • Reduce the operating debt by improving expense/revenue margins.
  • Increase facility usage by 10 percent. 

Parks

  • Remove 150 trees.
  • Plant 300 trees.
  • Inject 350 trees.
  • Maintain over 100 planting beds and planters.
  • Mow turf in 30 different parks.
  • Maintain four bathroom stations and manage over 100 trash/recycling receptacles daily.
