Notice of Public Information Meeting for the Preservation of the North Breakwater Pier Light (Lighthouse) on September 14, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. in the Port Washington City Hall Common Council Chambers

The City of Port Washington is preparing to conduct work to maintain and preserve the historic Port Washington North Breakwater Light. Ownership of the light station, which was constructed in 1935 at the end of the harbor’s north breakwater, was conveyed from the United States Coast Guard to the City of Port Washington in 2017. The structure was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

The project will perform maintenance and preservation work based on recommendations in a report prepared by Legacy Architecture, Inc. of Sheboygan commissioned by the City in 2017. The City contracted Legacy Architecture again to prepare construction documents and lead the project. Proposed work includes repairing deterioration to the concrete base, abating lead paint, repainting the steel structure, and restoring broken porthole windows. Building upon safety and structural improvements to the breakwater completed in 2020, project goals are to ensure safe public access to the light, maintain the structure for active service, and protect this treasured symbol of the City for future generations.

A public input session is scheduled for September 14th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm in the Common Council Chambers of City Hall, 100 W. Grand Avenue. A formal presentation on the project will begin at 5:30 pm, followed by an opportunity for attendees to provide input and ask questions. A cost estimate will be prepared by Immel Construction of Green Bay in October. A second public input session will be scheduled on a date yet to be determined.

Mission Statement

The Engineering Division is responsible for the design and construction of public improvement projects including:  street reconstruction and resurfacing, watermain replacement, sanitary sewer replacement and rehabilitation, stormwater system improvements, flood control, pollution prevention, green infrastructure, lighting improvements, parking lot improvements, maintenance of the City’s breakwater and lighthouse, park construction, harbor walk construction, marina improvements, and sidewalk and bike path improvements.   This Division builds and maintains City infrastructure records through its GIS system, seeks funding through grant writing, supports other department needs, guiding, overseeing, and inspecting all new development.

Guide Sustainable Development

  • Create standard specifications for construction.

  • Develop an infiltration/inflow program in coordination with the Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent.
